Superheroes

“I in them and you in me—

so that they may be brought to complete unity.

Then the world will know that you sent me

and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

John 17:23

Superhero movies are all the craze these days.

With action scenes, intricate plots, riveting super powers, and good verses evil, it is no surprise that more and more movies and television shows are popping up consistently. Who doesn’t want to see the good guys beat the bad guys and save the world?

This past weekend, the new Captain America movie hit theaters, and the civil war that ensued between superheroes made a clear statement that much more can be accomplished when there is unity! The divide between the characters showed the destruction that came from division well, and it truly depicted the phrase “united we stand, divided we fall.”

This is a reminder to us as believers that the importance of unity is great. We are told in Scripture that as Christ followers, we will be known by our love for one another.

Think about that concept for a moment.

Our example to the world is our love for one another.

Unity must be at the center of our communion with one another. We must resolve to be one each other’s side, even when we don’t agree with one another. There are ways to have differing opinions while being loving and kind to one another.

It is in the place that we encourage one another that we are empowered to become heroes to a broken world!

“Who rises up for me against the wicked?

Who stands up for me against evildoers?

If the Lord had not been my help,

my soul would soon have lived

in the land of silence.”

Psalm 94:16-17

The man who is greater than any character dreamed up in a superhero movie is our hero and His name is Jesus.

When we know that God is for us and not against us, it changes the way we live our lives. It enables us to have the courage to be heroes to those around us! Our trust and security in who God in allows us to change the world, one person at a time.

So, let this be an encouragement to you this week! Head out to watch a superhero movie and know that we, as believers, have the ability to share the good news of Jesus Christ each and every day. Share the gospel with a neighbor, sponsor a child, volunteer at a local outreach event and be a hero!

The world is waiting for us to join in unity and show who God truly is.
