On August 26, 2026, a section of Himalayan glacier collapsed above the Nepal border and unleashed a flash flood that has already killed more than 1,380 people and left more than 5,500 missing. What Happened

A glacier gave way. A valley had no warning.

Here is the disaster in plain terms: what broke, what it did, and why entire communities in Nepal never saw it coming.

1. High in the Himalayas, a glacier broke apart.

Roughly 5,200 meters up, a huge section of ice and rock sheared off a glacier above the Nepal-Tibet border and began to fall.

2. The collapse slammed into the river and dammed it.

The falling ice and rock crashed into the Lhende River with enough force that early sensors mistook it for an earthquake. The debris instantly plugged the river valley like a cork.

3. The makeshift dam failed within minutes.

Water backed up behind the rubble until the natural dam gave way. Regional flood scientists recorded the Trishuli River rising 27 feet in 30 minutes as the surge broke loose.

4. A wall of mud, ice, and debris roared downstream.

The flood tore through Timure and Syafru Besi in Rasuwa district and reached into Nuwakot and Dhading, burying homes and markets and sweeping away vehicles with people still inside them.

Dozens of bridges were torn out and roughly 25 miles of road disappeared — including a highway that gave way days later. Hundreds of hydropower workers were trapped in flooded tunnels, and rescue crews are still drilling to reach them.

Figures are changing daily as search crews reach areas that were cut off by the flood, and different outlets are reporting slightly different counts. These reflect the most recent numbers reported by Al Jazeera as of September 9, 2026. We will update this page as the picture becomes clearer. More than 7,500 homes have been destroyed and roughly 20,000 more damaged beyond repair, with UN teams now estimating over 2.2 million tonnes of debris across the flood zone. Nepal observed a national day of mourning on September 7, marking two weeks since the disaster; roughly 500 hydropower workers are still believed trapped in flooded tunnels, though four more survivors were pulled out alive this past week. Nepal's government now estimates the disaster caused roughly $2.56 billion in infrastructure and property damage, and has asked the UN's Loss and Damage Fund for $20 million to help cover recovery costs.

The Danger Isn't Over

A second flood is threatening the same valley.

The Wednesday collapse didn't just bury villages downstream — it also blocked two river channels with rock and ice, forming barrier lakes that are still filling behind a dam scientists call "highly unstable." If it gives way, it could send a fast-moving, debris-laden flood back through the valley with almost no warning — straight toward the hydropower tunnels where rescue crews are still trying to reach trapped workers.
