NEPAL EMERGENCY — WE NEED YOUR HELP

A wall of ice and mud just buried entire communities.

On August 26, 2026, a section of Himalayan glacier collapsed above the Nepal border and unleashed a flash flood that has already killed hundreds and left more than a thousand people missing. Expect Hope Nepal is already on the ground responding. Survivors need food, shelter, and medical supplies in their hands this week, not next month.

A glacier gave way. A valley had no warning.

Here is the disaster in plain terms: what broke, what it did, and why entire communities in Nepal never saw it coming.

1. High in the Himalayas, a glacier broke apart.

Roughly 5,200 meters up, a huge section of ice and rock sheared off a glacier above the Nepal-Tibet border and began to fall.

~1,200m drop
2. The collapse slammed into the river and dammed it.

The falling ice and rock crashed into the Lhende River with enough force that early sensors mistook it for an earthquake. The debris instantly plugged the river valley like a cork.

USGS: landslide, not a quake
3. The makeshift dam failed within minutes.

Water backed up behind the rubble until the natural dam gave way. Regional flood scientists recorded the Trishuli River rising 27 feet in 30 minutes as the surge broke loose.

4. A wall of mud, ice, and debris roared downstream.

The flood tore through Timure and Syafru Besi in Rasuwa district and reached into Nuwakot and Dhading, burying homes and markets and sweeping away vehicles with people still inside them.

3+ villages hit directly
5. It cut the valley off from help.

Nineteen bridges were torn out and roughly 25 miles of road disappeared. Hydroelectric plants downstream were damaged, leaving the region without power right when it needed light and communication most.

Rescue access still limited

Figures are changing daily as search crews reach areas that were cut off by the flood, and different outlets are reporting slightly different counts. These reflect the most recent numbers reported by Fox News and Al Jazeera as of August 27, 2026. We will update this page as the picture becomes clearer.

We were already there. Now we're moving.

Expect Hope Worldwide has served in Nepal for years, walking alongside local churches and communities as one of our four nations of ministry. That embedded presence means we didn't have to wait for a flight or a visa to respond. Our team was already there.

1

Expect Hope Nepal has mobilized relief vehicles, tents, and stretchers and is moving toward the hardest-hit areas of Rasuwa district right now.

2

We are sourcing food, shelter, and medical supplies directly from local markets still standing, which gets help to families faster and supports the local economy while it rebuilds.

3

We are documenting every handoff. As roads reopen and communication returns, we will post photo and video updates showing exactly where relief went and who it reached.
